Collective Effort Opening Reception: Born in Tokyo, Japan, Eri Ishii moved to Canada to complete a graduate degree in Psychology and to pursue her painting career. She has exhibited her work in both Canada and internationally. Ishii’s canvases are covered in layers of delicate, lightly applied oil paint by which means the subject is given a dreamy and atmospheric quality, filled with visual depth and a strange sense of ennui and nostalgia. Ishii believes that visual art has a unique ability to tap into the subconscious and connect people which no other thing can. She has explored several different subjects over her career to date; from the figure in movement, to the series of disquietingly still bodies which conjured an anxious vulnerability in the work, to her most recent paintings of soft landscapes and buildings. In her new series, "Collective Effort", Ishii explores the process of transition. The series consists of 21 oil paintings, drawings, and mixed media works on paper. Eri Ishii strives for work that captivates while stimulating the imagination leading the viewer into a psychological response to each painting.
