Joanne's ceramic vessels are handbuilt without using a potter's wheel. The exterior surfaces are burnished and polished with a smooth object to a high reflective finish; no glaze is used. The vessels are fired in a kiln packed with saw dust; soot from the firing process is deposited on the surfaces resulting in the dark colouration. Gold leaf is applied to the interior surfaces.
