Painter, muralist, and
print maker, Juan Manuel Sánchez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in
1930. He studied with Alfonso Lafita and Vicente Puig. Sánchez first
exhibited with Ricardo Carpani and Mario Mollari, in 1956. In 1959, they
founded the Spartacus Group with Juana E. Diz, E. Bute, C. Piedras, R.
Lara, P. Di Bianco, F. Venturi and C. Sessano. Juan Manuel Sánchez has
received prizes and mentions throughout his career; has exhibited and
exhibits his work around the world and the latter forms part of the
permanent collection of several museums in different countries. Currently,
the artist resides in Vancouver, Canada and divides his time between his
studios in Vancouver and Buenos Aires.
One term suffices
to define the art of Juan Manuel Sánchez: synthesis. Over the years,
Sánchez evolves towards the reduction and deconstruction of his already
essential forms in keeping within his very personal aesthetic vocabulary.
What we see is the essential; what we perceive is, on the contrary, quite
complex. Sánchez impregnates the bare minimum with ideological concepts,
deep emotions and stirring sensuality. Thus, his workers of the Spartan
period speak of the artist's views on the human condition; the more recent
images of voluptuous women and embracing couples reveal Sánchez, the man,
and his love of life. The whole reflects "a quest for a better world".
