Jan Smart graduated from the Emily Carr institute of Art and Design in 1981 and received her BFA from ECIAD in 2000; since then she has had numerous group and solo exhibitions in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Whistler and Ottawa. Her work is found in both public and private collections across Canada and the United-States. Jan’s subjects of large scale, deliciously painted fruit and flower still-life, surrounded by gold leaf backgrounds are inspired by the 17th century Dutch school of Vanitas painting. Vanitas describes a style of still-life painting which was intended to remind the viewer of the fleeting nature of life, pleasure and acquisitions. Jan has modernized the historical Venitas subject by removing the sense of intimacy of the traditional still-life, painting her subjects on a massive and larger than life scale. Her over-ripe fruits and fading flowers have become almost obscenely luscious in a delightfully voluptuous way.
