Katsumi Kimoto was born in Sidney BC in 1976. He
was raised in Ucluelet, a small fishing and logging community on the
west coast of Vancouver Island. He studied fine art at Kwantlen
University in Surrey where he received a Diploma in Visual Arts in 1999.
After which, Katsumi attended Concordia University in Montreal, where he
completed a Bachelor in Fine Arts in 2001. Upon finishing his BFA, he
returned home to BC and attended Bristish Columbia Institute of
technology where he completed a Certificate in New Media Design.
A natural colourist, Katsumi chooses his colour palette to set the
temperature, mood and overall feeling of his abstract paintings.
His colour choices combined with his treatment and his manipulation of
paint create the subject matter of these visually stunning and complex
artworks. Katsumi permits "the paint to be paint", allowing it to flow
and blend almost naturally, while "guiding it along the way". The
results of which viewers will often relate to something they only
experience in nature, such as being under water, in a snowy forest, a
flower filled garden, or the colours of a sunny summer day.
Katsumi lives in Vancouver and paints between his
two studios, one in Vancouver and the other in his hometown of Ucluelet.
