CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN ART

ARTIST STATEMENT

Glass blowing is my passion. There is no other place I would rather be, than sitting at the bench with a blowpipe in hand. After years of working with the material, I am still as eager to learn and create as I was the first day I set eyes on molten glass.  In some ways you could say I am addicted to blowing glass.  The graceful and athletic movements integral to handling molten glass strike a chord deep within my nature.

My life experiences inspire me. Growing up in South Africa exposed me to a lust for life that does not exist anywhere else.  People sing and dance in every aspect of life and stories are told through the performance of dances.  The inspiration for these choreographed tales range from animals in nature to everyday chores.  My desire is to capture a sense of that motion and rhythm in my work.  Glass blowing is an innate means of conveying this message and rhythm both through the process and the final works of glass art.

Movement and gesture also inspire me greatly.  Our ability to convey feelings and thoughts through simple and subtle motions is intriguing.  Capturing the essence of these interactions between individuals through the posturing of my work, invites the viewer to respond to the movements or the gestures, and in so doing relays a story to the viewer.  My inspiration runs deeper then just the physical and external presence of movement, I am interested in portraying through the art, what lies beneath and can be clearly expressed through our movements.

I experience a deep satisfaction when I see others look at the work and proceed to mimic the rhythmic gestures contained in the piece.
