TEMPERATE TO TROPICAL Lush verdant foliage, sun streaming through treetops, the moistness of the earth almost steaming from some primordial stew: these are all lasting images generated by the oil paintings of Nicola Wheston. Wheston's home base on the west coast of Canada in Salt Spring Island and her yearly sojourn to the jungles of the Bahia of Banderas, Mexico, reflects the similarities of the two landscapes while celebrating their differences. In this show, Wheston explores the richness of the natural world focusing on a small moment within the intricacies of a jungle floor or a root system of a fallen tree beside the ocean rather than long distance vistas filled with complicated compositional elements. A sensuality permeates the paintings of voluptuous leaves or swaying grass under a blooming dogwood tree in an August Salt Spring meadow enticing not only the visual to become engaged. Ranging in size from 28 inches by 26 inches to four feet by six feet paintings, an immediacy and intimacy reigns like you're standing in the middle of the landscape yourself. With vibrant colours and defined lines but with thick daubs of impressionistic strokes building dimensional layers, the play of light creates a visceral experience akin to joy. Andrea Rabinovitch
