ARTIST STATEMENT:
This body of work
examines and explores the monumental and isolated landscapes we find in
the northern parts of the world. They are painted from memories of the
nature that surrounded me in Norway, where I grew up. These spaces
appear as cold and isolated, and the drama and rawness of this kind of
landscape represent something solid and enigmatic. At a time where our
world and our view is dominated by urban spaces, I want to take the
spectator to places like this, which still exist, as they have existed
for thousands of years. A natural aspect of the paintings is also what
this kind of environment symbolizes, which I want to keep open for
personal interpretation by letting the viewer be free to wander around.
I work from a very
limited pallet, using only process cyan, yellow and burnt umber as
colours in addition to black and white. This refers to the
subject-matter, as it is the basic colours to be found in the north, and
it underlines the possibilities and richness of what's basic.
Most of these
paintings are acrylic, but some of them have parts painted in oil. Using
atmosphere as a starting point, the images are the results of an
intuitive process where layers and small details in the brushwork add up
to more complex structures and an illusion of a specific space.
